Title: Fairy Tale in New York
Author: rysler
Date: 04/29/06
Source: Gilmore Girls/Law & Order: SVU
Pairing: Alex/Lorelai
Notes: What, Chris wrote another Alex/Lorelai song fic when she's supposed to be writing something else? What? Chris created a directory for all the songs that go along with her song fic? That's pretty self-indulgent.

Summary: Lorelai looked again. "Glasses. Manicure. Suit. Maybe she's a lawyer. Aren't the Harrids getting a divorce? Maybe..." She turned and grabbed Gary's arms. "She's from the IRS!"

* * *

Lorelai hadn't noticed the blonde sitting in the window of the soda shoppe when she walked in. She was therefore surprised when the soda jerk took her by the shoulders and rotated her in the direction of the window. "You have to go talk to her," he said, as she took in the woman drumming her fingers on the table, an empty bottle of coke by her hand.

"She's had three sodas in five minutes."

"Oh, Gary," Lorelai said, reaching up to pat his hand on her shoulder, "Is she making you too much money?"

"Look at her!"

Lorelai looked. The woman checked her watch, glanced out the window, and then drummed her fingers on the table. "She seems nervous. Maybe she's waiting for someone."

"Who? Who would a complete stranger wait for in this shop in Stars Hollow?"

Lorelai crossed her arms. "A...realtor?"

"Okay." Lorelai looked again. "Glasses. Manicure. Suit. Maybe she's a lawyer. Aren't the Harrids getting a divorce? Maybe..." She turned and grabbed Gary's arms. "She's from the IRS!"

Gary rolled his eyes. "Why would someone from the IRS be here? We don't make enough money to be audited."

"Good point."

"Go talk to her."

Lorelai blinked. "Me? Why me?"

"Because she freaks me out. And you freak people out. So you can--It's your duty. As a citizen."

"She's from the city. People don't talk to each other in the city. It is not their way."

"We're in Stars Hollow, Lorelai."

Lorelai shook her shoulders. "Fine." She stalked toward the blonde, and stopped in mid-stride. "I freak people out?"

Gary shooed her, saying, "Maybe she'll want to stay at the Inn."

She sighed and went to the blonde's table. "Hi."

The blonde looked up, and her eyes widened as Lorelai sat down across from her. An expression of surprise, but not anger or fear or annoyance. Lorelai began to wonder what this woman had been surprised by to not find it so startling. The woman hadn't looked at her watch once in the ten seconds since Lorelai had arrived; she'd just looked at Lorelai.

"I'm Lorelai," Lorelai said, and smiled as brightly as she could.

"I'm... Margaret."

"You hesitated."

"What?" Margaret raised her eyebrows.

"Before you said your name. You hesitated. Did you have to think of your own name?"

"Of course not. You took me by surprise," said Margaret.

"I'm sure I did. Let's start again. I'm Lorelai."

"... Margaret."

"You hesitated again," said Lorelai.

Margaret shrugged.

Lorelai nodded. "Are you agoraphobic, Meg?"

Margaret folded her hands on the table. "No, I am not agoraphobic. What--"

"Because you seem nervous."

Margaret looked at her watch.

Lorelai reached over and covered Margaret's wrist. "And you're freaking the customers out."

Margaret jerked her hand away and stood. "I should go."

"Go where?"

Margaret looked around the soda shoppe, and her shoulders slumped. She sat back down.

Lorelai frowned, and said, "That was a rhetorical question. You were supposed to storm out."

Margaret smiled slightly. "I don't have anywhere to go, really."

Lorelai put her chin on her folded hands.

Margaret said, "I... Don't like to be outside much."

Lorelai squinted.

"Look, it's not clinical. It's situational."

"The situation of being outside," Lorelai said.

Margaret wrinkled her nose. "I was going to make myself sit here for ten minutes. I didn't think anything would happen."

"Like me."

Margaret chuckled. "Like you."

"So. Are you new in town?"

"Yes. I'm here on... I'm here."

"I see that."

Margaret narrowed her eyes.

Lorelai said, "Where are you staying?"

"The Dragonfly."

"But you haven't checked in."

"No. I thought just going straight there and hiding in my room would be cowardly."

"Well, when you put it like that," Lorelai said, and grinned.

"How did you know I hadn't checked in?"

"I own the Dragonfly," Lorelai said. Margaret looked appropriately impressed. Lorelai took that as a good sign, and said, "And we have a rule at the Dragonfly."

"Shirt and shoes at breakfast?"

"I'm taking you out tonight."

"Every stay comes with a date?"

"Just one. Think of it as a door prize."

"We're in a soda shoppe."

Lorelai sighed, and said, "What are you, a lawyer? Particulars. Don't you want to go out with me?"

Margaret covered her mouth to chuckle.

"You don't think I can be entertaining on a date?"

"Can you be?"

"I'm very entertaining," Lorelai said. She tilted her head and squinted at Margaret. "Are you?"

Margaret bit her lip and grinned. "No."

"That's okay. I'm entertaining enough for the both of us."

Margaret laughed. "Where are we going? Dancing?"

"Look around you. There's no dancing here."

Lorelai shook her head.

"Silent Hill is playing."

"Isn't that based on a video game?"

Lorelai looked at her nails. "I have no idea. I just read it on a poster on the way over. What do you like to do?"

"I... like to read, I guess." Margaret glanced around.

"My daughter likes to read."

"Not you?"

Lorelai sighed. "Sadly, not."

"What do you like to do, then?"

"I like to listen to music."

Margaret nodded.

"Hey... we can combine the two."

"All right."

Lorelai smiled. "Great, a date. Now... I was doing something, before Gary called me over." She curled her lips over her teeth and bit.

"Inn-related stuff?" Margaret offered.

"No. But, that wouldn't be a bad thing to do, I suppose. Want to check in?"

"I'd love to."

* * *

Kid Rock blasted from the speakers in Lorelai's living room. Margaret sprawled on the couch, a satchel next to her.

"Are we having fun yet?" Lorelai shouted from the stereo.

Margaret smiled lazily. She picked up the remote control and pointed it at Lorelai, and turned the volume down just low enough so that she could hear herself talk. "I love this song."

Lorelai laughed. She spun around. For the date, she'd put on blue jeans with a retro flair hip, and was wearing a shirt that looked like three shirts in one, all wrinkled together like they'd been taken out of the wash, tied in knots, and dried. Casually festive, Margaret mentally labeled her.

Margaret had changed into Dockers and a white polo shirt, had taken her hair down and put in contact lenses. She watched Lorelai dance across the living room in perfect focus. "Is this your daughter's music?"

Lorelai stopped in mid-swing. "No, this is mine. Rory doesn't believe in this kind of music. She believes in separates. 'Rap and rock should not be mixed, mom. It makes the whole genre grungy.' Then again, she owns a Nine Inch Nails album. Sometimes I don't even know her."

Margaret laughed.

Lorelai perched on the edge of the couch. She was wearing white socks, and put one foot on the coffee table. "What do you like to listen to?"

"The Beatles?"

Lorelai recoiled. "How old are you?"

Margaret smiled and said, "My dad had the White Album. He'd play it loud enough for the neighbors to complain, and wouldn't let me watch television until I could recite the words to his favorite songs. He said television would rot my brain."

Lorelai raised an eyebrow.

"Don't throw stones, Mrs. Kid Rock."

"Ha. Clever girl." Lorelai bounced off the couch and went to the stereo. She hit a button, and the track changed to something lighter and jazzier and sadder.

"This is Christmas music."

"I like the mood it sets."

"Do you know what month it is?"

Lorelai wandered back to the couch. She settled next to Margaret. "What did you bring to read me?"

Margaret patted her lap. Lorelai rolled over and put her head on Margaret's legs, and sighed. Margaret reached over her for her satchel, and pulled out a stack of magazines.

"That's Esquire."

"It's still reading."

Margaret flipped open the magazine. "10 Things You Don't Know About Women."

Lorelai laughed. Margaret stroked her forehead. Lorelai kept laughing. She flopped over and slapped Margaret's knee.

"Don't you want to know?"

Lorelai inhaled. She said, "What I want to know... You know those moments? Where you have everything you want in life? Perfect fiance, perfect daughter, perfect family. Business is good. The weather is perfect. And you feel so dead inside, and so scared, because the only thing worse than feeling that way is causing someone else pain? Telling someone else that their perfect moment is built on sand?"

"Yes." Margaret put the magazine down. She touched Lorelai's cheek.

"I don't feel like that now."

"That's good."

"I did yesterday," said Lorelai, rolling onto her back.

"That's bad."

Lorelai grinned when Margaret's fingers brushed her lips. She said, "Who are you?"

"You didn't hesitate."

Margaret tilted her head, and met Lorelai's eyes. "I want to be Meg."

"I think you are Meg."

Lorelai closed her eyes. Christmas music still played. She said, "I love this song."

"You know those moments that are so perfect that you want to make them more perfect? By taking a risk that you could never take in an imperfect moment, because it's the happiness and the safety of the moment, the warmth, that gives you the courage to take the next step, and ruin everything?"

Lorelai kept her eyes closed. "You're not afraid of anything, Meg."

"When you met me I was scared of soda shoppes."

"I still don't think you're afraid."

"You know me so well, already. That's scary."

Lorelai scrunched her cheeks. Margaret bent down, until her nose brushed Lorelai's. Lorelai lifted her chin, and said, "I smell mint. You expected this, didn't you."

"I brushed my teeth, Lorelai. It was only polite."

Margaret's hand strayed to Lorelai's ear, stroking the curve, brushing hair behind it.

"Why are you hesitating?" Lorelai asked.

"I'm enjoying the moment."

Lorelai cupped the back of Margaret's neck, and opened her eyes. "There are better moments you could be enjoying."

Margaret laughed.

Lorelai arched up, pressing her lips firmly against Margaret's. Margaret drew back to kiss Lorelai's chin and forehead. Lorelai tugged on her hair and wrestled her into another lingering kiss.

The stereo kept playing.

Thank you SOOOOO much for this. It was wonderfully sweet and funny (I smiled and laughed my way through it) and absolutely exactly what I needed at the moment.

Damn. I'm gonna have to get an Alex/Lorelai icon, aren't I? :)

I highly recommend Alex/Lorelai icons. They're festive!

I'm glad you liked this. Funny and sweet and alive... that's the day I've had, at least, the day that propelled me into writing. So if it helped your day, too, awesome. So much better than falling flat.

No Frontiers is one of my fave Corrs songs, it is one of the few songs where you can actually hear Caroline sing. I think she should sing more songs :)
I also like Madness a lot, but Dolly Parton is just not my thing.

Whenever I think about starting to write, I have the music plotted out for it, but then I don't actually start writing because I have no talent at all. But I have loads of possible soundtracks *g*

Hmm. I'm not a fan of the Corrs, really, but I do love that arrangement. Perhaps it's Caroline's sinigng that wins me over, then. ;)

Madness is great. I recommend the whole album if you haven't heard it.

I'm not sure it's a matter of talent... I'm just compelled. Like an itch I need to scratch, or scream with the discomfort.

I go running instead of screaming with the discomfort. But when ever I like a character or a pairing that hasn't had the proper exposure regarding fics I feel compelled to start writing.

The Corrs - the old stuff from Forgiven Not Forgotten, or then the Unplugged recordings - are my "guilty" pleasure. You can hear the harmonies really well on those albums.
I have a few Madness CDs, but I don't know which ones and I don't have access to them at the moment.

I think I love these fics so much b/c to me they feel original but with someone (Claire/Alex 'cos I watch SVU) I can immediately connect to. Loved this one, a wonderful wake-up fic for a lazy Sunday morning :)

Thank you! Your perspective is fascinating. I've wondered if Lorelai's humor would work on someone who doesn't know her, or if it's too tied to her character.

It's a good morning so far. :)
